La Rioja lies in the north of Spain.It has a total area of 5.028 km², a population of 301.084, and 174 municipal areas. La Rioja is a province and autonomous community. It borders the País Vasco (province of Álava), Navarre, Aragon (province of Zaragoza), and Castilla y León (provinces of Soria and Burgos). The River Ebro flows through this region, as does the Río Oja, for which it is known. There are mountains reaching 2271 meters. Shaded relief map of La Rioja Its capital, Logroño is situated on the Ebro River. Other cities are Calahorra, Arnedo, Alfaro, Haro, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, and Nájera. La Rioja is the smallest populated and the second-smallest autonomous community in Spain. Many of the municipalities have fewer than 200 people. Approximately half of the population lives in the capital.
