The autonomous community of Extremadura is the 5th largest in Spain, but only 2.5% of the population live here. It covers an area of 41 634 km² with an official population of 1 083 879 (2005). Extremadura is the poorest region in Spain. It is divided into two provinces, each with a capital of the same name: Badajoz Caceres Badajoz and Cáceres are, respectively, the largest and second-largest provinces of Spain. It is an important area for wildlife, particularly with the major reserve at Monfragüe.
